Data Factory

How is our biometric data collected, used, sold, or stolen?

Concept

The rapid development and convenience of biometric technology have led to its swift acceptance and integration into daily life. However, most people fail to realize the critical importance of their biometric data—such as facial information—which is akin to a password that cannot be changed.

In this project, I aim to evoke a sense of uncertainty and lack of control regarding the value and usage of personal information, highlighting the hidden, unseen activities behind the digital networks. Where does our data go? How is it being used? My goal is to encourage reflection and spark discussions on these questions.

From this idea, I abstracted a concept: "The Data Factory"—a repository that collects, stores, processes, and commodifies vast amounts of personal data at its core.

(1)

Cameras in neighborhoods, streets, and airports collect data on people's movements and behaviors, feeding this "raw material" into an information database.

(2)

Beauty filters and social apps collect facial data, analyze social connections, attributes, and even real-time locations, feeding this information into the database. Over time, the raw data is processed to construct a multidimensional profile of an individual.

(3)

At this stage, the database holds a complete and thoroughly analyzed information profile.

(4)

At this stage, the database contains an uncontrollable information profile, detached from its owner and sold via automated systems.

(5)

【 It could also be targeted by data thieves!!】

(6)

And the potential risk of
password breaches!

Technology is advancing rapidly, and I'm unsure if humanity is fully prepared.

Some see it as an opportunity, while others feel anxious and resistant to these unfamiliar and uncontrollable forces.I don't entirely reject technological progress. For example, surveillance cameras in public spaces are not solely negative; they play a key role in ensuring safety. However, we must acknowledge the conflicts between new technologies and old mindsets. Whether through improving laws or providing psychological buffers, humanity must address internal conflicts and desires. Only through reflection and collaboration can we move forward positively.

I hope this work conveys meaning and offers a visual representation of this issue. For me, it has been a valuable learning experience.
