Translate Color and Taste — Glass Casting Technique

This project started with the chance to learn glassmaking at Fraunau's workshop. My goal was to create a piece that uses the transparent, stone-like texture of cast glass, which lets colored light subtly shine through. The “rough” feel of cast glass is relaxing, making it ideal for home use. I hope this piece can create spaces of relaxation in people's busy lives, helping them enjoy the present moment.

I wanted to connect color with scent through aromatherapy candles. I envisioned five scenarios, each with a unique essential oil blend and corresponding color. The flowing colors in the glass would enhance the experience, making it more immersive.

Glass material sourcing

the glass workshop in Fraunau

Mix plaster and silica powder in a 1:1 ratio, add water, and pour into the space within the mold. Let it dry.

Steps and methods for making a plaster mold:

After the plaster mold is finished, remove the clay (or wax).

Making a positive mold

Calculate the weight of the glass, then place the glass pieces in the planter above the mold according to their color tones.

Measure the mold's volume with water, calculate the glass weight using a density of 2.5, and add a small value for melting loss.

Firing

Remove the plaster and sand for finishing.

Different treatments of the mold will result in different effects.

This project focuses on "Rest." In today's fast-paced world, anxiety and stress push people to keep moving, leading to burnout. Many cope with distractions like phone use or late nights, but these don't provide true rest. The goal is to help people escape the overload of information and experience the calming power of the present moment. Effective rest is essential for achieving a balanced, productive life.

During the creative process, I discovered that mistakes can lead to unexpected beauty, like the cracks in the plaster creating beautiful leaf-like veins on the glass. This helped reduce my fear of "losing control" and showed me that it can lead to the freedom to break away from constraints.
